GeoPad(TM)Information Technology for Field Science Education and Research
|
Presentations and PublicationsThere are a vareity of sources of additional information on GeoPads and GeoPockets, for both technical and non-technical audiences. Many of the presentations listed below include pictures of equipment in use in the field under a variety of conditions. The paper and video listed immediately below are probably the best places to start learning about GeoPads. PapersKnoop, Peter A., and van der Pluijm, Ben (2006) GeoPad: Tablet PC-enabled Field Science Education. In: The Impact of Pen-based Technology of Education: Vignettes, Evaluations, and Future Directions; editors: Dave Berque, Jane Prey, and Rob Reed. Purdue University Press. If you are unable to locate a copy of this publication, please contact Peter Knoop. VideosA collection of interviews with faculty and students using GeoPads in a variety of field courses from 2008-2009. They share their thoughts on the benefits and pitfalls of using GeoPads in field science education, provide suggestions on what to consider when integrating GeoPads in a course, and offer examples of how GeoPads are being used in courses and on field-trips. (Participants include The University of Michigan, Bowling Green State University, Northern Arizona University, and The University of New Mexico; funding for the video was provided by an HP Technology for Teaching grant to Peter Knoop at the University of Michigan.) Workshop on Teaching with GeoPads, 16-18 February 2007 (Montana State University, Bozeman, MT) Conveners: David Mogk and Peter Knoop This workshop was convened to develop resources and tutorials to help facilitate use of GeoPads across the geoscience curriculum. It brought together a group of instructors who have been working towards best-practices in education using GeoPads. It sought to investigate how to lower barriers to enable novices to effectively acquire, use, and maintain GeoPads by helping them find and use resources already developed, and to work more efficiently by not reinventing the wheel. The end-product of the workshop is a maintained web-site dedicated to teaching with GeoPads: Geological Society of America (GSA) Annual Meeting, 22-25 October 2006 (Philadelphia, PA)
